If you’ve ever struggled with keeping on track with your health goals during the holidays, keep reading!
The holidays should be a time to enjoy food and company without guilt. But that doesn’t mean we have to completely “fall off the wagon”. Thinking in black and white terms of being “healthy” or “unhealthy” isn’t helpful for our health – physically or mentally.
Here are 3 easy ways to support your gut health (that won’t take away from the holiday celebrations)!
1. Bone Broth
Bone broth is soothing for the gut, full of vitamins and minerals, and a good source of protein. I recommend buying the bone broth in the freezer because the gelatin, which soothes the gut, is still intact. The gelatin in the shelf-stable bone broth has been broken down in the cooking process to make the bone broth shelf-stable.
—> Enjoy a warm mug in the morning, make hot chocolate, bone broth, or use it as the base of soups
2. Digestive Bitters
These bitters contain bitter herbs like ginger, orange peel, gentian, and artichoke that promote digestion. They stimulate digestive organs to release their digestive juices, promote motility, and alleviate gas. Researchers also think that our gut bacteria can “taste” the bitterness, and it helps to support our microbiome!
—> There are many different ways to enjoy bitters, here are some of my favorite ways:
- Spray directly on the tongue when feeling gas or bloating
- Add to sparkling water with a meal to help digestion
- Use to make mocktails or cocktails
- Mix with ginger tea for extra gut health benefits
3. L-glutamine by SFI Labs
If you need extra gut soothing, L-glutamine is my go-to for decreasing inflammation. It helps to soothe the colon cells and helps to decrease inflammation in the gut. It can be taken 1-3 times daily, by mixing it in water.
—> I recommend L-glutamine in the following scenarios
- If you’re gut feels inflamed or irritated
- You are celiac or gluten sensitive and are worried about inflammation from cross-contamination
- You have IBD and want to keep inflammation levels low
*I find L-glutamine works very well for people who have any degree of gluten sensitivity or Celiac Disease.
