Many people with gluten intolerance or Celiac Disease have obvious gut symptoms like bloating, gas, or diarrhea/constipation. However, some individuals who have no gut symptoms experience other negative symptoms from gluten.

Here are some common symptoms I see that people with undiagnosed Celiac Disease or gluten intolerance have:

*Please note that many of these conditions have a variety of root causes. Celiac Disease or gluten intolerance is just one potential root cause.

Skin:

  • Rashes
  • Keratosis pilaris
  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis

Brain:

  • Migraines
  • Brain fog
  • Anxiety
  • Low mood or mood swings

Other:

  • Canker sores
  • Chronic iron deficiency or other vitamin deficiencies
  • Joint pain or arthritis
  • Inability to lose weight or unable to gain weight
  • Autoimmune diseases or chronic inflammatory conditions
    • I find that many people with Hashimoto’s, IBD, and Rheumatoid Arthritis have some degree of gluten intolerance

What to do if you suspect you may have Celiac Disease or a gluten intolerance:

Here are some action steps to take if you suspect you may have a problem with gluten.

  1. Eliminate gluten completely for 3-4 months. Take note of if any symptoms resolve during the 3-4 months. Then, add gluten back in to see how you feel and if any symptoms return.
  2. Work with a practitioner to get a comprehensive stool test showing immune reaction to gluten or a food sensitivity test
  3. Ask your doctor for a Celiac Disease blood panel that includes tTG
